However, I am leaving tomorrow or in Germany it would already be today. Jan-10-2008… Yep, that would be in a few hours. I totally forgot about it until Kim told me about two or three days ago. Now I have packed all my stuff and will go to Orlando with way too few money. I guess I just have to deal with that somehow. I am going to take my brand new digicam that has a 2 year warranty with me to take some awesome pictures that will be uploaded and put online immediately when I arrive back home, I promise!!! Das wetter ist, wieder mal, total verrueckt. es schneit jetzt durchgehend seit 2 tagen ohne unterbrechung, und der schnee am boden faengt an zu schmilzen und gefriert dann wieder in der nacht, das bedeutet eisglatte strassen die man nicht sehen kann. unfaelle gibt es demzufolge massenhaft in den letzten tagen, gott sei dank meistens recht glimpflich. weihnachten UND neujahr sind rum und sind hier in amerika beide sehr enttaeuschend! weihnachten, das seit mitte november ueberall ist und, wie bereits beschrieben, einem die vorfreude so richtig vermiest, ist nichts als nur ein vorwand geschenke auszupacken und die geburt des „erloesers“ zu… naja feiern wuerde ich nicht garde sagen aber „gedenken“ trifft es wohl ganz gut. das heisst an christmas eve, dem 24.12. wird dann abends ein geschenk fuer jeden geoeffnet und dann am morgen des 25.12. macht man den rest der geschenke auf, immernoch ganz ohne die spur irgendeiner weihnachtlichen stimmung oder feier oder sonst irgendwas was in deutschland so standard waere. bekommen habe ich uebrigens (von den geschenken die mir aus deutschland geschickt wurden mal abgesehen) nichts als klamotten…

silvester, oder wie es hier genannt wird, new years eve, war dann auch der totale reinfall. der in deutschland wohl am meisten gefeierte feiertag ist hier NICHTS. die grossen feiern und partys und was man sich so alles bei silvester vorstellt haben hier nirgendwo statgefunden. sogar die partys auf denen is illegal alkohol gab (von denen habe ich mich uebrigens fern gehalten) war wie mir freunde berichtet haben nichts los und man hat sich dann eben besoffen gelangweilt. ich habe dann meinen countdown in einem fastfood restaurant verbracht, das hat ja irgendwie auch stil, oder etwa nicht? angestossen wurde mit einem wasser und bei so viel ironie auf einmal muss man einfach lachen und somit war der abend dann auch ganz OK. im anhang noch ein paar bilder vom tubing, snowboarding bei dem ich klaeglich versagt habe, und silvester.

 EDIT: ist es nicht verblueffend das meine riesen füße auf ein snowboard passen???

however, i already got sick of Christmas about 1 or 2 weeks ago. Christmas preparation here starts even earlier than in Germany and everybody who can’t hear „last Christmas“ by WHAM anymore would die here. All those weird Christmas songs just won’t let you go and follow you everywhere. I already wonder if there might be hope to hear some music that is not about Christmas. The weather perfectly fits winter. The temperatures drop down to -20° C and tonight there is a blizzard supposed to come. actually, you can already see the traffic lights moving from one side to the other, close to breaking of. OK it’s lunchtime now. See ya later

When it’s about Christmas decorations, American people go crazy! They come up with insane ideas and you could think they lost every type of common sense. However, somehow they really finish those projects and you see amazing decorated front yards everywhere around the neighborhood. But sometimes… people don’t know when to stop and go, as I think, a little bit to far and make the night as light as the day.

Another difference is that Christmas still refers to the birth of Jesus here. When I think back to Christmas time in Germany, everybody celebrated it without any deeper meaning. It was just a great chance to be nice to each other and get gifts. Also, people here don’t buy gifts in the last two days before Christmas but already in November^^

I hope I could keep your excitement up with this post and hope that there will be a big event coming on the next days.

In der letzten Woche wurde mir wirklich klar warum es so viel mehr Wert ist ein gesamtes Jahr hier zu verbringen, anstelle von einem kurzen Urlaub, denn umso laenger man hier ist, desto mehr drastische kulturelle Unterschiede fallen einem auf. Entgegen meiner anfaenglichen Vermutung, ich werde auf einige kleine Unterschiede treffen, es baut schließlich alles auf der westlichen Zivilisation auf, sehe ich immer weniger Gemeinsamkeiten. Der wohl drastischste Unterschied ist das Denken der Menschen hier. Bereits vor Generationen muss es den Amerikanern aberzogen worden sein, selbststaendig und vor allem kritisch zu denken und wenn das dann mal jemand tut und vielleicht mal etwas in Frage stellt wird dieser gleich als dumm und seltsam herrausgedeutet. Wie soll man selbststaendiges denken in eine Gesellschaft zurueck bringen, wenn die Eltern es nichtmal koennen? Sie wurden ja selbst so erzogen, blind dem zu gehorchen was der Vorgesetzte oder die Eltern sagen. Und wehe man faengt an zu diskutieren, denn dann hat man die Regeln der Familie und deren Gefuehle verletzt.

Mein Schlusspunkt ist,

Die amerikanische Familie und Gesellschaft hinkt dem modernen Leben weit hinterher und so groß Freiheit hier auch geschrieben wird, die Unabhaengigkeit des Geistes ist den Menschen unbekannt!

About my trip itself: Friday morning was the day it started. That means getting up at about 7 o’clock and then quickly get your stuff into a small bag, hoping not to forget something. After that it’s time to hit the street with the goal to reach the Detroit airport as fast as possible. > Airplane >Check out > Subway > Grand Central Station. This is the place where we met Clark the first time. An unbelievable nice person who opens his home to two strangers. Well, we were talking to each other on the phone before but it’s still something special! Thank you Clark! When we saw him he gave us a few maps of NYC and some stuff he said we just have to do. So Kim and me were walking through NYC, having no idea of all the stuff around, but that made it even better! We spend the whole night walking around and entering the observatorium of the Empire State Building. Awesome view once again! The next day I could sleep until 10 am. THANKS!!! I totally needed that sleep, just as I would actually need it right now. However, we got back to Manhattan again (Clark lives at Staten Island). A whole day just sight seeing, and I’m a real sightseeing person. It was great! After that we met Todd (or so) who took us with him to a Japanese restaurant were I tried Sushi the first time and I truely like it. Then we met the other AT cure tour people at some kind of a bar and after that went to the Times Square. Have I already mentioned that it’s really big??? Well, it is! Subway > Staten Island > sleep… A new day and also the last one was sunday. The day of the NYC marathon, what’s actually the reason we came, just to watch Tim Borland. After realizing that it’s impossible to see the start because it was all closed, we decided to go to the finish, the Central Park. Worked out very well and we even hat some great positions right at the side of the track. Good, good. I actually can’t remember what we did after that, but I can tell you that the journey to Jenison on Monday went well and I am healthy
